January 17, 2011 Lake Anderson

Been bass fishing at Lake Anderson four times since the beginning of the year, and every time out the bite has been pretty good.  The water level is low due to possible repairs to the dam this winter.  The water clarity is around 2-4 ft., and has been clearing since the beginning of the month, now that we’ve had a couple weeks without a storm.  The bass definitely like these sunny days.  They seem to be most active during the middle of the day, on south facing banks with rock.  I see fish scattered at all depths (5-50ft.) on the fish finder, but the active feeding fish have been relatively shallow (5-15ft).  I have yet to catch anything over 2.5lbs these last few trips out, but between two anglers we’ve been averaging around 15 bass a day, and just about all of them are at least keeper-sized fish.  Plastics fished slowly on the bottom have been the most productive technique, though the baits they prefer to eat have been changing day to day.  One day they eat a jig well, then the next day they won’t touch a jig and all they will eat is a tube.  During Monday’s guide trip a nail rigged Reaction Innovations 5” Flirt worm was the hot bait.  Darker colors like green pumpkin, brown/blue, and brown/purple have all worked well.  Shallow diving crankbaits, spinnerbaits and lipless crankbaits have also caught some fish.  Though you may not get as many bites, they seem to be a little better size, usually around a couple pounds.  No matter what lure you throw, the key is to fish really slow, even with the reaction baits.  The bass at Lake Anderson have been schooled up pretty good too.  Many times we will catch 3 or 4 fish off the same little rockpile.  Hopefully this weather stays nice, and the fishing remains good!  Lake Anderson is located in Morgan Hill only minutes away from San Jose.

Lots of fish but nothing over 1.5 pounds,  Drop shoting robo worms in anywhere from 5-50 feet was the most productive technique.  Fish were deep in the morning and moved shallower in the afternoon when the wind picked up.  Spinnerbiats caught a couple as well.  The lake is dropping fast because they plan on doing some work on the damn in a couple weeks.  The lake will close once the work begins.
